Vendor-purchased fluxes are used during the armor creation process to refine the materials to ensure suitability. Armormechs can reverse engineer their crafted armor and possibly discover new ways to improve armor creation. The gathering skill Scavenging provides crafting resources for Armormech. Armormechs can also craft aim, cunning, shield and absorb augments. These can be installed in any item that has an augment slot.

Armormech is one of six Crafting Skills with the ability to work with hard metals and electronic shielding to construct all types of personal armor. Even the "green" quality gear created by Armormech tends to be better than most quest rewards of the same level requirement, while the "blue" quality craftables are by far superior.
Armormech is the crew to work with hard metals, alloys and synthetic materials to construct armor for non-Force users. Vendor-purchased fluxes are used during the armor creation process to refine the materials to ensure suitability. Armormechs can reverse engineer their crafted armor and possibly discover new ways to improve armor creation. The gathering skill Scavenging provides crafting resources for Armormechs. Underworld Trading allows you to collect rare metals for "blue" and above quality gear - however, none of these are necessary to get Armormech from 1 to 400. Since Armormech costs quite a bit to level up, you might want to take a 2nd gathering crew skill to help pay the bills.

Armormechs can craft medium and heavy armor. The medium armors are intended for Smugglers and Imperial Agents, typically boosting the "cunning" stat. The heavy armors are intended for Troopers and Bounty Hunters, typically through boosts to the "aim" stat.
Basic schematics (green, obtained from an armormech trainer) can be crafted from metals and compounds obtained through the Scavenging skill. Higher level schematics (blue, purple, and orange) often require metals available through Underworld Trading.
There is a chance to "crit" on armor crafting. When this happens, an armor is created with an open "augment" slot. Augments can be inserted to add bonuses to the armor. Augments can be obtained through slicing or through the markets.

Patch 1.2 changed the way Augments are obtained. Schematics are obtained through Slicing, and Armormechs can learn the schematics that boost:
Crafted armor can be reverse engineered by its creator. Reverse engineering allows the armortech to reclaim some materials, and also offers a chance for an upgraded schematic.
Schematics can be likened to tiers as shown:
- Green, or "Premium" schematics as base schematics
- Blue, or "Prototype" schematics as tier 1 schematics
- Purple, or "Artifact" schematics as tier 2 schematics
Reverse engineering a base schematic can produce a tier 1 schematic. There are three possible outcomes, each adds a prefix to the name of the armor. "Redoubt" adds a defense rating, "Critical" adds a critical rating, and "Overkill" adds a power rating. Each tier 1 schematic includes an increase in the armor stat over the base schematic.
Tier 1 items can also be reverse engineered with the intention of gaining a tier 2 schematic. Tier 2 schematics replace the prefix with a new one, and also add another boost to the armor, randomly chosen from shield rating, accuracy rating, alacrity rating, surge rating, and presence. Currently, redoubt equipment appears to be the sole exception, not being able to produce a tier 3 schematic with an alacrity rating. Tier 2 schematics also include an increase in the armor stat over its tier 1 iteration.
