"Bioanalysis is the practice of collecting genetic material from creatures and vegetation. Genetic materials include cell fibers, bacterial strains, toxic extracts and medicinal fluids. Biochemists use these materials to create medpacs to restore health, stimulants (single-use injections) that provide a boost to physical abilities, and biological implants that enhance combat prowess by stimulating neural networks and regulating brain stem functions. The crafting skill Biochem utilizes Bioanalysis resources. Bioanalysts can send their companions on missions to gather resources.

Recommended Crafting Skills: Biochem.

―In-game Codex (Crew Skills)[src]

Bioanalysis of one of the four Gathering Skills which involves collecting genetic material samples from creatures and plants in the game.

Bioanalysis missions can be used to gain Biochemical Components, Biochemical Samples, and things such as First Aid Kits. Be warned, the first aid kits, implant parts, etc. can be bought at a lower cost from the craft skill supplies merchant.  If you take Bioanlysis, the recommended crafting skill is Biochem.

Bioanalysis can also be used on plants, and sometimes on creatures you have killed and looted. These will display on your minimap as stars.

You can also use Keybinding for Your Companion to Gather ♥. Hit Escape, Preferences, Controls, then General. Here you can select what keys you would like to command your companion to perform Bioanalysis with. By default it is right click. You still have to loot it yourself but if you walk over and right click and right click again then your companion will scan it and you can move on to the next thing to do.
