- "Early spaceflights were conducted with sleeper ships, their crews preserved via suspended animation over the long journeys to other worlds. But these journeys were incredibly slow."
- ―Excerpt from Galactic History 08: Hyperspace Cannons codex entry
A Sleeper ship was an interstellar vessel capable of achieving faster than light travel, via a rudimentary dimensional drive, while it's inhabitants were kept in a state of suspended animation, as typical light speed made travel between distant stars last for decades or centuries.
Up to that time, Coruscanti Humans used Generation Ships. They learned the technology to construct Sleeper ships from their Rakatan overlords while Coruscant was a part of the Infinite Empire circa 30,000 BBY. The technology was also made feasible with the discovery of carbonite ore in the Koros system. However, early space travel was inefficient and dangerous, and as a result many Sleeper ships suffered catastrophic failures.
When the Infinite Empire fell, the Sleeper ships contributed to the colonization of other star systems before the invention of hyperdrive technology. The Core was settled by Humans from Coruscant with this technology.
A different kind of Sleeper ship was constructed by the settled worlds of the Tython system during their "pre-Republic" isolation, and were launched from the Planet Furies Gate. These ships attempted to reach the rest of the galaxy, but were never heard from again, the ultimate fate of these vessels is unknown.
