11 awesome and very important MMO improvements in Star Wars: The Old Republic

There is no doubt about it, Star Wars The Old Republic is not only going to be an absolutely amazing game, but also a ground-breaking MMORPG. Ever since the game was announced back in 2007, the huge development team has continuously been improving the game and readying it for 20 December 2011, only 5 days from now, when the game will finally be released.

If you're not sure if the game is worth buying, this list of 11 amazing SWTOR features will definitely convince you! If there's something you really like about the game and it isn't on the list, feel free to leave it in the comments!

Voice Acting
  1. Voice acting - One of the best features of the game: full voice acting! No MMORPG has ever had voice acting on this scale, with every single character having an actor. Even the player character is fully voiced!
  2. Choices - It wouldn't be a BioWare game if it didn't feature some sort of dialog system. The choices you make in the game could very well decide the outcome of the Galactic War!
  3. Companions - Another feature BioWare is using from their past games is companions. No longer do you need to hold on to your Companion Cube for company, because now you can actually start a relationship with one of the dozen (alien) companions in the game!
    Hoth
  4. A huge amount of locations - Do you prefer a snowy environment, or would you rather try to survive in the hot desert sun? The Old Republic has it all! Hoth, Tatooine, Coruscant; they're all there, ready for you to explore them!
  5. Ships - Who doesn't want to fly a starship across the galaxy? Each class has their own ship, and it will serve as your base of operations! Decorate it, self-destruct it, you can do whatever you like!
  6. Multiple play styles - Personally I prefer taking down my enemies from long range, but I'm sure that some of you want to look your enemies in their eyes before dealing the final blow! And lucky for you, you can choose how you play the game! Cut off some limbs using your light saber or use the force to take you enemies down from a distance; it's all up to you!
  7. Canon - Unlike some MMORPGs that have total disregard for the canon of their universe, The Old Republic's story will actually be fully canon! I'm sure this'll greatly please the hardcore Star Wars fans out there!
    Sith Pureblood
    XsariAdded by Xsari
  8. A massive amount of unique races - Are you looking for a bit more diverse races than the generic Elves or Orcs most RPGs have? Look no further! The Old Republic has no less than 9 unique playable Star Wars races!
  9. Unique missions - Nobody likes killing X amount of creatures or retrieving item Y just to gain some experience. The Old Republic's quests are all unique, featuring their own storyline and amazing rewards. Some of the quests you complete actually affect other quests and the relationship with your companions!
  10. Space combat - Yes! You can actually battle against fellow players in space! Not only that, BioWare promised us a system "that'll make you pee your pants"!
  11. MMO: Massively Multiplayer Online - You might have forgotten all about it with all these awesome features, but you can actually play this game with others! Slay some Sith (or Jedi) together, improve your ship or explore a planet with your friends, anything's possible!

Don't forget to leave your favorite features in the comments! Heck, we might even add them to the list!

  • Dude, shut the fuck up, your overhyping is not helping TOR.

  • Hey this is slightly off topic to the old republic but it is Star Wars related, if anyone here was a fan of the 2005 Star Wars Battlefront I have made a campaign to show how many people would want one and to see peoples ideas for a new installment. I if you'd like to join here's the link https://www.facebook.com/pages/Help-Star-Wars-Battlefront-III-Youre-Our-Only-Hope/162945943807932?sk=info Also another question does anyone here think that Battlefront should expand on the battles/wars and have this wars in the game along side the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War?

  • Best thing about this game, in my mind, is the perceived lack of "borders". The only way World of Warcraft could expand on its world was to add "other dimensions" or another island that magically appeared out of no where, which we'll just say was "lost for centuries... but we found it!". Star Wars has the entire galaxy/universe to work with and can create any number of planets, each unique in their own right if they really wanted to, to add more to this game. It's really simple and easily overlooked when you think about it - the fact that they have an infinite resource to pull from without having to worry about adding some "magical" "story changing" thing to the game just to accomodate a new expansion is pretty great, and much easier to work with. Also, since it's Science Fiction, you can literally go anywhere with it - the craziest idea for a planet is easily workable with a "Oh, we created the ______ device so you can explore this hazardous, and cool, planet", much like Quesh.

This is one of the biggest things that I find so great about this game - the locales are amazing and fun to visit. Coruscant and Nar Shaddaa are my personal favorites, and even the planets I liked the least (Alderaan and Balmorra) still had some sort of reason for making you be there (duh, like a story and stuff). Despite that I really didn't like Alderaan, I thought it had one of the best introduction sequences as an Agent (shocking the nobleman in front of the guy you're trying to "persuade" to your side was fuggin' hilarious; Stupid Nobleman: "You suck" You: "You really ARE an idiot. *click*" Stupid Nobleman: "Aaahahhhhghghghh!" Guy in charge: "You make a convincing argument..."

    • The "other" island in WoW didn't appear magically... it was there before WoW was even released you just wasn't able to set sail to it until the expansion landed. I don't like WoW but come on this fanboism is getting ridiculous. You are approving the stupid and ancient zone-to-zone method over the Seamless technology. It takes away from believing you are in the world because all what happens is you "load" an instance of a zone they tell you it's a planet but in reality all these planets are the same thing... there's no virtual distances between them, you instantly "zone" to them in a second and you like that don't you?

      Fanbois....

  • can someone tell me why this blog page is in the news section?

  • Why do people feel the incessant need to compare every little aspect of this to WoW. I think it's almost like they feel if they can prove one MMO is better than the other that is would also prove that the "lesser" game should not be played at all. PEOPLE CAN PLAY BOTH WOW AND SWTOR!! It's not an either/or kind of thing. If you like WoW keep playing it. If you like SWTOR play it. If you don't like either/both then don't play them. Comparing features in MMO may be reasonable, but you can never use that alone to say people MUST or MUST NOT play one game over another. It all comes down to personal preference and I want to say again that no matter which you prefer you actually can still play both if you want!

  • I've put in about an hour so far, and I'm very impressed with what I've seen, even though it feels like I'm leveling really slowly, (my bounty hunters only at level 4). The voice acting is awesome, the story is good, and the combat has a nice flow to it. I think it'll become a nice side-game for when I'm not up to playing WoW.

  • i have a 12 and 10 yr old that play WoW like it's the newest most innovative thing they have ever seen. i've only just allowed them to play MMOs in the last month or two. i on the other hand have been playing MMOs since late UO early EQ (since about 2000). "awesome" ,"very important" and "improvements are relative terms. it all depends on your perspective and preferances. most MMOs are still all the same basic mechanics with some variations, nothing ever really majorly or drastically different. one day i may wanna be a worgen druid, the next day i may want to be a chiss bounty hunter. bottom line is no one decides for me what i like. as long as the GAME provides an escape from reality for a HEALTHY amount of GAME time for me then it's all good. with that said, number 11 confounds me the most. i see it all the time but can someone please explain to me how the last thing people nowadays mention as an after thought is oh yeah, you can play with other people. it is called an MMO, i know back in the day you were forced to group with other people to accomplish just about anything worthwhile. i thought the social aspect was what an MMO was all about. now people bitch about how they can't solo the whole damn game. i have an idea, don't play a damn MMO, i love the hell out of the elder scrolls series, the mass effect franchise and games like that. but when it comes to MMO(massively multi-player online) for some reason i expect to be expected to group for the worth while content, otherwise i'll go to skyrim.

  • "The Old Republic's quests are all unique,"

Yes, because killing 12 droids is totally unique and bears no comparison whatsoever to killing 9 orcs, or killing 9 trolls, or killing 6 members of some evil organization.

    Unique.

    • That part of the list got me, cause from what I've played, most quests are kill quests, thankfully no collection quests (yet), but atleast your killing with a purpose. Also, from what I've seen on some quests the kill parts are listed as (bonus objectives) though you usually end up doing this on the way to your objective.

    • "killing with a purpose"? If there isn't something wrong with a "light side" Jedi slaughtering dozens or scores of "criminals" day in, day out, and even being rewarded for it ("Bonus Objective: Stage 3"), I don't know what is. I know this is an MMO action adventure, but when you include moral standards a la "Light Side/Dark Side", you might as well make a point of it.

  • Foolish fools! SWTOR is the FRIGGIN WOW KILLER>IT KILLED WOW. IGN and many others claim that these features are the BEAST!ANd that they are groundbreaking! SWTOR wants u a Happy New Year!

    • At moment SWTOR is still quite buggy (it even has still quite a few bugs that were already reported during beta) and it misses many features other MMOs have. BioWare has still much to do, and even then I doubt it will kill WoW.

    • Unlike WoW...where we can rejoice in 7 years of shoulders decapitating our characters...it's quite normal for a MMO in it's startup phase to have bugs, don't see the big problem. WoW's only problem is that it's too accessible now and there is not enough around to keep people interested. Those who still play obviously do so for a reason.

    • If I compare SWTOR to RIFT, which had even in beta far fewer bugs than SWTOR has after release, and the devs of RIFT worked hard to fix any issue quite fast, while SWTOR still has bugs that got reported months ago during beta. So the devs of SWTOR appear to be pretty sloppy. The game feels clunky and it even crashes sometimes to the desktop (mostly on Taris). The game makes the impression as it was released too early, and the official forums have already many threads about people quiting the game, because it's for them barely playable or feels just terrible. Wonder how RIFT got that so much better with a much lower budged.

    • Well it does not help that it released so close to Christmas so give them a bit of time. i heard they are focusing on UI and Balance ATM

  • To be honest, nothing is ground-breaking about this game unless you played 'MMO genre' games your entire life. If these 'new' features are amazing and spectular to you, then you should broaden your horizon a bit, because it's all been done again and again. No gameplay, regardless of the platform, is going to be innovative unless I can be able to play the game without a controller or keyboard.

  • Wow, this review is so biased... So far SW:TOR looks to me like a lot of marketing (just like STO). The single-player side of things (leveling up/questing) is fine and dandy but in no way ground breaking or innovative. WOW did it 6-7 years ago but simply with no cut scenes, no voices and bad graphics. Rift copied WOW a year ago (and did a better job then SW:TOR has) and has good graphics so that only leaves the cut scenes and voice acting as something unique for SW:TOR. And as any MMO player should know - the actual leveling is only a tiny part of the entire MMO experience. What's important is end-game content - both actual content (dungeons, raids, fun things to do at max level) but the game also has to offer a framework for competitive game play. WOW does the latter fairly well (and Rift fails dismally at it - and both fail at the former imo). Anyway, I digress... My main worry after having played SW:TOR for a bit is the fact that many many things were directly copy/pasted from WOW and many more were heavily "inspired" by WOW but what worries me much more then that is WHAT was copied and more specifically what was NOT copied from WOW. Say what you will about WOW (I'm not a huge fan personally) but they really have the "comfort" and technical side of things covered very well. Things like a decent LFG tool, customizable UI, simple in-game macros etc. are basic tools for any MMO that wishes to ever "beat" WOW and get a serious number of long-term players. A nice quest line with voice actors isn't gonna do that for you. Neither is the Star Wars theme. The only way an MMO can become serious competition for WOW is if they learn from the mistakes of WOW/Rift/SWG/etc. and bring in many innovations of their own to make a _better_ game. I see very few innovative features in this game. It's a (fairly sub-par) WOW clone mixed with some SWG concepts and lots and lots of hype. Currently I don't see any serious WOW-players (competitive raiders and PVPers) migrating to SW:TOR any time soon. Personally I would have expected more for 130 million dollars. Perhaps the SW franchise cost 100 million of something. Coming from WOW or even Rift to SW:TOR is really like stepping back in time into the dark old ages of vanilla WOW. Not learning from the mistakes that WOW and Rift made really hurts my trust in Bioware's ability to recognize what long-term MMO players want. Why the hell do you think Blizzard invest so much time, money and effort into all these "comfort" features? Because they think people will hate them and quit? I think not - it's because they recognize the importance of these little things when you want to keep people hooked to your game for years. Bioware obviously does not recognize this or at the very least doesn't prioritize that side of their MMO. I'll be very interested to see how subscriber numbers develop in the coming 3-6 months.

    • Out of that entire novel of a comment I got the one good point that Blizzard is very good at making a game with a comfort feel to it. That's one of their trademarks. Excellent story is Bioware's trademark, and based on how many people jumped on this game, i'm guessing people like it. They took an old excellent game and expanded it into a modern form that can be played by millions of people at a time. The whole attitude that people who play MMOs only enjoy what's offered at max level, which is usually less then 25% of the content, is just ignorant and elitist.

  • A couple points you mention are not unique to MMOGs , mainly 4 and 6. However, the game is nonetheless beautiful. I got a chance to watch a friend play it and was very impressed. I'm a huge Mass Effect fan so I'm glad to see what they're doing with the dialogue. I sure hope this is a good sign for a possible Mass Effect MMOG in the near future.

  • i hears they spent more than 130 Millions on SWTOR... im sure they game worth it!

  • Puh-leese! The items you bring up are by no means ground-breaking or in any way able to differentiate SW:TOR from other MMORPGs, except maybe (and that's a big MAYBE) the voice acting. Everything else is either plain wrong, or it has been around before. Time to get this article off the "News" section! It's a fine personal opinion (which I don't agree with) fit for your personal blog, but it's definitely not a news article.

  • I personally have found the space combat to be enjoyable for what it is, but ultimately lacking in what I wanted it to be. I was hoping for something more than a tunnel-shooter; full free movement in a three-dimensional environment is where it's development should be aiming for. I appreciate that it makes the current missions a write-off, as objectives become far too easy, but it would pave the way for a more versatile multi player experience in this part of the game. An interesting point of discussion would be the introduction of a format similar to Star Wars: Empire at war, though this is only a personal preference of mine, and is really a format in its own right.

  • You do not fight others in space. Not yet anyway

  • This post just turned me off this wiki. I love SWTOR, but the above is garbage.

  • I have no idea how this post stay up as news, 'cause it not only reeks of fanboyism, but it's just mostly inaccurate and false... OK, most people who visit this wiki will be fans and/or players but the news section could or should be a fairly objective view on (semi)-official things considering The Old Republic games. This piece is just trash (sponsored?) journalism... I hope MarkvA is able to stop tuoching himself while playing SW:TOR, cause this news post really gives me the feeling he does that kind of thing... It's clear that the good posters/contributors/admins left this wiki for green SW:TOR pastures, and after seeing this, I can't blame them! So please people, try to uphold a level of decent contributions, you don't help anybody with posts like this.

    • This post is a positive review by someone who clearly enjoys the game, no review is completely objective - nor should it be. If you have constructive criticisms of the game, then either add them in a comment or start your own blog. Your comments are neither relevant nor helpful.

As a general rule , we (across all wiki) don't accept people making personal attacks against other users for what ever reaons, and aspects of your post do constitute that against MarkVA. Please don't do it.

    • It still has no use being on the news section, it should be on his personal talkpage/blog. Maybe I overreacted, but this isn't clearly a "positive" review, it's just plain misleading towards new people because of the false statements. The News sections should very well be, a NEWS section, not a false advertising section... And I do love the game and playing it every time I can so it's not because I don't love/like it, it's because MarkVA is stating flase information and overhyping it to a galaxy far, far away... (hate the server queues though D: )

    • Yeah, this is definately just a statement against the post being called news. It is misleading and illinformed.

  • Nobody here is saying the game is bad, SWTOR is AWESOME, the blog entry that is awful...

  • There is a lot of love in this thread. I've played SWG, WOW, COH/COV, Guild Wars, STO, and hell, I have even tried EQ2. What really needs to be said is that it comes down to personal preference and play what you like or what your into. as for me, I am a sci-fi kind of person and will be playing STO and SWTOR. Again, its personal preference. Lets not get so excited over something that to be honest is trivial, a game is a game.

  • To all the WoW cryers and lover, guys get over it... WITH or WITHOUT SWTOR WoW is dead... done, over, old, and about to be burried... You see... the thing is... it's boring, i plated it for 6 years i know what i'm saying, the game bores me like hell i really only log on to chat a bit in TS3 with some friends i made along those 6 years and we use raids as an excuse to it, as simple as that. This Swtor is awesome and fresh, "ah... but wheres cc? and wheres my pet class?" guys... Get over it dont try to compare it to WoW. It's not even important if it's better or worse, it's different that's all it matters. EVERYONE is tyred of WoW and to keep crying just because you are afraid it really shuts down and you lose you beloved chars it's stupid. It's not over in that way of course, server will be alive long after even blizz stops to patch the game so all you cryers will still be able to pay for it and play. So stop all the crap, be honest and admit that at least this is different and stop saying "OMG it doesn't have gnomes so it sucks!" that's plain stupid comparing it to wow and there's a number of really good reason why you shoudn't try to do that. The main point it's this game, Swtor, It's Star Wars in an MMORPG. No other reason would even be necessary for it to be a huge success but on top of that it's very good and polished. Well done Bioware.

    • OMG it doesn't have gnomes so it sucks! just about fell off my chair. I love this post. you are so right man good job. I love swtor! I love the new fresh taste of the MMO. I also played WOW for years and feel the same way you do. great post.

    • WoW and SWTOR are both horrible games in my opinion.

    • Actually if I was a WoW-lover I would be happy to play SWTOR... because it's the same shallow quest-driven experience... but with voice overs! ZOMG!... Unfortunately, I am not a WoW-lover. I don't care for WoW and thus I don't care for SWTOR. Both provide shallow, on-rails experience minimizing the meaning of what an MMORPG is all about.

    • ^ Troll above needs to know what he/she is talking about before making comments like that. Please enlighten us with your amazing views what a MMORPG is all about. That would really be helpful in forming my own opinion, as well as all the other people playing SW:TOR or WoW, because we really agree with everything a certain person says, or does, because we follow like sheep. Muppet!

    • ^^ then what exactly are u doing in the SWTOR Wiki(besides trolling)

    • Great point, would have been better if not so negative and like 1/4 as long.

  • Most of your points are inaccurate my friend.

  • Lol you didn't like what I said and you decided to delete my post?

  • How are multiple play styles (ranged and meele) and multiplayer never seen awesome mmo improvements ?

    • Beats me.. the play styles are very limited. Heck there are no pet classes or CC specialized class to name a few. SWTOR is probably the most limiting "MMORPG" of all the MMORPGs I've played.

    • With companions every class is a pet class. And all classes have plenty of CC. But yes, feels not different enough in those aspects from each other.

    • ^you mean all besides the Marauder <- needs a CC or is crap in PvP and the Smuggler is F*** OP 6k crit my ass ( i'm a sniper and my highest was around 3k max)
